A Guide To Mulching
How to Mulch Properly
Apply mulch 2–3 inches deep around the base of your tree.
Spread mulch in a wide ring, about 3 times the width of the root ball (or as far as the drip line allows).
Leave 6–12 inches of space around the trunk so the mulch does not touch the bark.
Water thoroughly after mulching to help the soil and roots settle.
Avoid "Mulch Volcanoes"
Never pile mulch against the trunk of your tree. This practice, known as a mulch volcano, can lead to:
Bark rot
Insect and disease damage
Girdling roots that restrict growth
Rodent infestations
Premature tree decline or death
Mulching Tips
Refresh mulch each year as needed, keeping it 2–3 inches deep.
If adding new mulch, avoid piling it on top of old mulch.
A shallow berm around the outer edge of the mulch ring can help retain water—but never mound mulch against the trunk.
Remember: Keep the mulch wide, keep it shallow, and always keep it away from the trunk.
Proper mulching helps your tree retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, reduce weeds, and encourage healthy root growth. Follow these simple guidelines to give your new tree the best start.
