New Britain Community Garden Application - Open for 2024

Thank you for your interest in the New Britain Community Garden! Please read the rules and continue to the application form below.

COMMUNITY GARDEN RULES & GUIDELINES

SEASON DATES:

  • February 1: Registration for residents who participated last year opens

  • March 1: Gardeners may sign up for garden plots

  • May 1: Community Garden Application Closes

  • May 15: Second plots will be assigned based on availability on May 15th in the order that requests were received.

    If your plot is not utilized by June 1st it will be reassigned. 

APPLICATION DETAILS

  • Plots are available only to New Britain residents. Primary gardeners must be 18 years or older. 

  • Gardeners may reserve one plot by submitting completed application.

  • Each registered gardener will be assigned on a first come first serve basis a numbered raised bed plot by opening day. Gardeners may request the same plot in future years but assignment is not guaranteed.

  • Gardeners may request to be placed on a waiting list for a second plot. 

GARDEN HOURSThe gardens are open from sunrise to sundown.  

PARKINGPlease follow all posted city-parking rules. Violators may be ticketed. Gardeners must be mindful of the residential neighbors at all times! There is street parking on Belden and Chapman Streets next to the garden. Parking is prohibited on the other side of each street.

ORGANIC GARDENINGOnly fertilizers and pest control methods that are approved for organic production are permitted in our gardens.  Chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides are prohibited. This means no products like Miracle-Gro, Preen, Round- Up, Sevin, and others. Recommended weed control methods include hand-weeding and/or mulching with leaves and hay. If you choose to use pest control products, you must purchase products that are OMRI listed. Visit the OMRI website for more information.

NEIGHBORLINESS:

  • Gardeners are responsible for maintaining paths around their plot.

  • Please keep all plants within the confines of your raised bed.

  • Weeds must be kept under control. All weeds must be composted at the designated compost area.

  • Please do not pick vegetables from someone else’s plot or borrow garden tools unless you have their permission.

  • Community garden tools need to be returned to the storage area when you are done with them.

  • No structures are allowed except minimal plant supports.

WASTE

  • Please do not dispose of anything else in these compost area (including food waste). 

  • There are no garbage cans on site so please carry out and dispose of all other garbage off site.

WATERAll gardeners share water faucets and hoses. Please be considerate of others’ watering needs and return hoses to spigot area when done with them. Notify garden administrator of any problems with spigot or hoses.

COMPOST & MULCH: Compost and mulch may be available to gardeners on a first come first serve basis.

PETS: There will be no pets allowed at the Community Garden sites. 

ALCOHOL: Alcoholic beverages are not allowed at the Community Gardens.

FIRES: Fires are not allowed at the Community Gardens.

VANDALISM: If you notice unauthorized people in the gardens or suspicious activity, please help your gardening neighbors by calling the New Britain Police Department at (860) 826-3000.
